Durante el sermón voy a argumentar:

El Evangelio apunta hacia 1 Corintios 13, en el que vemos el amor, la esperanza y la fe en acción. Aprendemos además que una comunidad de amig@s rebosante de fe, esperanza y amor no es suficiente en sí misma. Todavía se necesita una cosa: encuentro personal, interacción personal, con Jesús. Ponga la comunidad y el encuentro personal juntos, y habrá un movimiento que le cuenta y transformara al mundo sobre el Evangelio.

During the sermon I’m going to argue:

The incident in the Gospel indicates 1 Corinthians 13, in that we see love, hope and faith in action. We learn further that a community of friends overflowing with faith, hope and love is not sufficient unto itself. One thing is still needed: personal encounter, personal interaction, with Jesus. Put community and personal encounter together, and there will be a movement that tells and transform the world about the Gospel.

Marcos ha reunido historias en 7: 24-30 y 7: 31-37 como imágenes especulares entre sí. Ambos ponen énfasis en las personas desafortunadas que padecen enfermedades que las aíslan de la sociedad (versículos 25a, 32a). Algo de dentro de la hija y del sordo les incapacita: un demonio (versículo 30), taponamiento de los oídos (versículo 33b) o bloqueo del habla (versículo 35).

¿Alguna vez has estado en algún lugar donde era obvio que eras el o la extraña? Eres quien tiene acento, quien no entendía del todo las costumbres locales y la lengua vernácula. Tod@s tenemos nuestras ideas preconcebidas de otras regiones, otras culturas, otras tradiciones religiosas, y otr@s tienen nociones de quiénes somos. En nuestro mundo de hoy hay un impulso visible para movernos a a encasillarnos o meternos en cajas rígidas por nacionalidad, ideología política, religión, región y tantas otras divisiones artificiales pero muy reales. A partir de ahí, el deslizamiento hacia el juicio y el ostracismo cobra fuerza, enviándonos detrás de las paredes y desintegrando lo que se suponía que era la comunidad amada de Dios.

La presión nos aprieta para conformarnos, ser como l@s demás, permanecer protegid@s y condenar y rechazar sumariamente a otr@s que no son como nosotr@s. Es un peligro claro y presente para nuestra comunidad, para este país, para el mundo y, sobre todo, para nuestra fe. Dios nos llama a una comunidad más grande; ir a las fronteras; buscar a las personas marginadas, las rechazadas, o sea, a la otra persona. Nuestro llamado no es traer a otr@s a unirse a nosotr@os, sino caminar junt@s hacia la vasta expansión de Dios. No es solo la lucha de la vida hoy; ha marcado la historia de la fe desde tiempos inmemoriales.

Y recuerda, la iglesia no es un museo para personas santas. La Iglesia es un hospital para sanar a personas pecadoras como nosotr@s. Ven para que te sanes.

Mark has put together stories in 7:24-30 and 7:31-37 as mirror images of each other. Both put emphasis on unfortunate people suffering illnesses that isolate them from society (verses 25a, 32a). Something from within the daughter and the deaf man incapacitates them: a demon (verse 30), ear-stoppage (verse 33b), or speech-blockage (verse 35).

Have you ever been somewhere when it was obvious you were the outsider? You are the one with the accent, the one who didn't quite understand local customs and vernacular. We all have our preconceptions of other regions, other cultures, other faith traditions, other - and others have notions of who we are. In our world today there is a visible push to move us into rigid boxes by nationality, political ideology, religion, region, and so many other artificial but very real divisions. From there, the slide to judgment and ostracism picks up traction, sending us behind walls and disintegrating what was meant to be God's beloved community.

The pressure squeezes upon us to conform, to be like others, to stay sheltered, and to summarily condemn and reject others not like us. It is a clear and present danger to our community, to this country, to the world, and above all, to our faith. God calls us to a greater community; to go to the borders; to seek the marginalized, the rejected, the other. Our call is not to bring others to join us but to walk together into the vast expansiveness of God. It is not only the struggle of life today; it has marked the story of faith since time be.

And remember, the church is not a museum for holy people. The Church is a hospital to heal sinful people like us. Come to heal yourself.
