Durante el sermón, te desafiaré, por un lado, a descubrir quién es Jesús para ti. Y, por otro lado, que aceptes el llamado de Jesús al discipulado radical.

During the sermon I will be challenging you on the one hand to discover who Jesus is for you. And on the other hand, for you to accept Jesus' call to radical discipleship.

Tod@s l@s que estamos aquí estamos siguiendo a alguien o algo. La pregunta es, a quién o qué o seguimos. Algun@s de nosotr@s seguimos un sueño. Lo que hacemos se basa en que intentemos cumplir ese sueño. Puede ser obtener un teléfono celular, un Mercedes nuevo, un título universitario o un novio o esposa. Podría ser, intentar parecerse a una determinada persona, cantar como una determinada persona o vivir como una determinada persona. ¿A quién o qué seguimos determina nuestro comportamiento y también determina nuestro destino? A veces podemos conseguir todo lo que buscamos y luego ser desafiad@s a dejarlo ir. Es fácil hablar de "Amo a Dios". Cuando en realidad todo lo que queremos decir es que "quiero ir al cielo cuando muera".

Jesús reconoce más que nadie que todo el mundo sigue a alguien o algo. Se encontró con un tipo que estaba siguiendo su dinero. Se topó con una mujer que seguía a los hombres. Se encontró con un tipo que seguía las tradiciones. Se encontró con algunos tipos que seguían carreras. Les dio a todos el mismo mensaje, "ven y sígueme".

En nuestra lectura de hoy, encontramos las palabras "El que quiera ser mi discípul@, debe negarse a sí mism@, tomar su cruz y seguirme". Ahora bien, Jesús no discrimina a nadie. El incluye a todos y a todas. Cubre edad, sexo, estatus, orientación sexual, condición de pecado, educación, raza, etnia, y posición en la comunidad.

Este llamado es una opción y no un comando. La persona debe elegir querer ser discípul@ de Jesús. Si no elige a Jesús, no niega la realidad de Jesús o la verdad de Jesús, simplemente se coloca fuera de las promesas de Jesús. Entonces, si eres quien sea y tienes el deseo de convertirte en un discípulo o discipula que es un/a seguidor/a de Jesús, entonces esto es lo que debes hacer.

Y recuerde, la iglesia no es un museo para gente santa. La Iglesia es un hospital para sanar a personas pecadoras como nosotros. Ven a curarte a ti mismo.

All of us are here are following somebody or something. The question is, who or what or we following. Some of us are following after a dream. What we do is based on us trying to get that dream fulfilled. It may be obtaining a cell phone, a new Mercedes, a college degree, or a boyfriend or wife. It could be trying to look like a certain person, sing like a certain person, or live like a certain person. Who or what we follow determines our behavior and it also determines our destination? Sometimes we might get everything we seek and then be challenged to let it go. It’s easy to talk about “I do love God.” When in fact all we mean is that “I want to go to heaven when I die.”

Jesus recognizes more than anyone else, that everybody is following somebody or something. He ran into a guy that was following his money. He ran into a woman that was following after men. He ran into a guy that was following traditions. He ran into some guys who were following after careers. He gave them all the same message, “come follow me.”

In our reading today, we find the words “Whoever wants to be my disciple, must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Now Jesus does not discriminate against anybody. Whoever includes anybody and everybody. It covers age, sex, status, sexual orientation, sin condition, education, race, ethnicity, and community standing.

It is an option and not a command. The person must choose to want to be a disciple of Jesus. If you do not choose Jesus, it does not deny the reality of Jesus or the truth of Jesus, you simply put yourself outside of Jesus’s promises. So, if you are a whoever and you have a desire to become a disciple which is a follower of Jesus, then here is what you must do.

 And remember, the church is not a museum for holy people. The Church is a hospital to heal sinful people like us. Come to heal yourself.
