During the sermon I will remind you that each
of our lectionary readings today addresses consumerism in a different manner. Job’s
story reminds us that nothing material lasts,
and we must find meaning beyond it. The
writer of Hebrews comforts those struggling under persecution by pointing to Jesus’
shared sufferings and greater power to
 bring us to our true home. And in the
 gospel, Jesus looks deeply into our
 consumerist eyes to warn us and call
 us home. .

Durante el sermón les recordaré que cada una de nuestras lecturas del leccionario de hoy aborda el consumismo de una manera diferente. La historia de Job nos recuerda que nada material dura y debemos encontrar un significado más allá de él. El escritor de Hebreos consuela a quienes luchan bajo la persecución al señalar los sufrimientos compartidos de Jesús y su mayor poder para llevarnos a nuestro verdadero hogar. Y en el evangelio, Jesús mira profundamente a nuestrosojos consumistas para advertirnos y llamarnos a casa

In the Gospel- Mark 10:17-31, Jesus presented
a choice opportunity. If we take this biblical
narrative for today literally then there is nothing
here for us to learn. This is because most of us
are not rich people. But if we can also read
between the lines and see the messages of
Jesus we will be listening to the voice of God
with our hearts. Following Jesus is a daily
choice. The choice to follow Jesus in life is
not just a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity but a
decision that is made every day. Christians
truly encounter Jesus through concrete events
 in life that occur "every day; not every now and
 then. " We must also remember that
because we have the ability and freedom to
choose, our actions have consequences. Truly,
the choices we make- especially those that are
spiritual and moral in nature — serve as reminders
that we are made in God’s image. Personally,
I believe that a desire to avoid accountability is
a major reason many people are drawn to a
materialistic-atheistic & consumeristic world
view. Furthermore, they don’t understand that
 God created and designed us to make choices.
Being a Christian will always bring the disciple into conflict with one's surroundings. Christianity goes against the grain of this world - its ideas, actions, desires. Even the ones who love and accept us
most readily, our family, will be in conflict with us
 over Christ if we decide to follow Him and they
don't. If you are a disciple or contemplating
becoming one, realize that your choice will include
 a lifelong conflict with your surroundings because
 this world and everyone within it are OPPOSED to Christ and if you stand with Him - will be opposed
 to you in one way or another. If you choose Christ,
 you have chosen conflict over peace. Whatever it means in your life the choice is always the same, to choose Christ is to choose to do HIS will over your own!

En el Evangelio, Marcos 10: 17-31, Jesús presentó una oportunidad de elección. Si tomamos literalmente esta narrativa bíblica de hoy, entonces no hay nada aquí que podamos aprender. Esto se debe a que la mayoría de nosotr@s no somos personas ricas. Pero si también podemos leer entre líneas y ver los mensajes de Jesús, estaremos escuchando la voz de Dios con nuestro corazón. Seguir a Jesús es una elección diaria. La decisión de seguir a Jesús en la vida no es solo una o
portunidad única en la vida, sino una decisión que se toma todos los días. L@s cristian@s verdaderamente encuentran a Jesús a través de eventos concretos en la vida que ocurren "todos los días, no de vez en cuando". También debemos recordar que debido a que tenemos la capacidad y la libertad de elegir, nuestras acciones tienen consecuencias. En verdad, las decisiones que tomamos, especialmente aquellas que son de naturaleza espiritual y moral, sirven como recordatorios de que estamos hechos a imagen de Dios. Personalmente, creo que el deseo de evitar la responsabilidad es una de las principales razones por las que muchas personas se sienten atraídas por una visión del mundo materialista- atea y consumista. Además, no comprenden que Dios nos creó y diseñó para tomar decisiones. Ser cristian@ siempre pondrá al discípulo o discípula en conflicto con su entorno. El cristianismo va contra la corriente de este mundo: sus ideas, acciones, deseos. Incluso aquell@s que nos aman y aceptan más fácilmente, nuestra familia, estarán en conflicto con nosotr@s por Cristo si decidimos seguirlo y ell@s no lo hacen. Si eres una discípula o discípulo o estás pensando en convertirte en un@, date cuenta de que tu elección incluirá un conflicto de por vida con tu entorno porque este mundo y tod@s los que están dentro de él están OPUEST@S a Cristo y si estás con Él, se opondrán a ti de una manera u otra. Si eliges a Cristo, has elegido el conflicto antes que la paz. Sea lo que sea que signifique en tu vida, la elección es siempre la misma, ¡elegir a Cristo es elegir hacer SU voluntad sobre la tuya!

It has been said that Jesus came proclaiming an upside-down kingdom. It is a popular way of saying that much of what Jesus said and taught changes the way we think. He said things like, if you want to live, you must die; And if you want to save your life, you must lose it. Our natural way of thinking is to hate our enemies and seek opportunities for revenge, but Jesus said: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. As we come to Mark 9, we find Jesus expressing another paradoxical way of thinking. He says that the way to greatness is the way to service. And if we want to be great, we must be the best servers. And, of course, this is not simply something that Jesus says, this is how He lived. The life and death of Jesus are the last demonstrations of the greatness of humility. That is the example of Anahí, Simón, Andrew, and Ronnie, how beautiful to have them in our church.

Se ha dicho que Jesús vino proclamando un reino al revés. Es una forma popular de decir que gran parte de lo que Jesús dijo y enseñó cambia nuestra forma de pensar. Dijo cosas como, si quieres vivir, debes morir; y si quieres salvar tu vida, debes perderla. Nuestra forma natural de pensar es odiar a nuestr@s enemig@s y buscar oportunidades de venganza, pero Jesús dijo: Ama a tus enemig@s y ora por quienes te persiguen. Al llegar a Marcos 9, encontramos a Jesús expresando otra forma de pensar paradójica. Dice que el camino a la grandeza es el camino al servicio. Y si queremos ser grandes, debemos ser los mejores servidores. Y, por supuesto, esto no es simplemente algo que Jesús dice, así es como Él vivió. La vida y la muerte de Jesús son las últimas demostraciones de la grandeza de la humildad. Ese es el ejemplo de Anahí, Simón,Andrew, y Ronnie, que bello tenerles en nuestra iglesia.
