Bendiciones

Homily title: How effective is inclusive innovation without participation?

During the sermon I’m going to argue that the opposite to exclusion is not inclusion. It is inclusion with participation. Participation is the key to an inclusive and sustainable future. There is a social phenomenon that we call tokenism: the practice of making only a superficial or symbolic effort to do a particular thing, especially by recruiting a small number of people from underrepresented groups in order to give the appearance of inclusion.

We are going to celebrate the historic legacy of the Rev. Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet (educator and co-founded the first permanent institution for the education of the deaf in the USA, and he became its first principal) and Rev. Henry Winter Style (the first deaf person that was ordain as a priest) we will place greater emphasis on the reality of being deaf and hard of hearing.

Very often we live by tradition, which provides continuity with the past and creates a sense of community. Yet sometimes the living tradition can be replaced by fossilized traditions which end up distracting us from what is essential in our beliefs and excluding others. In countries around the world, Human Rights Watch has documented how discriminatory elements of traditions and customs have impeded, rather than enhanced, people’s social, political, civil, cultural, and economic rights. International human rights law keeps calling for transforming customary and traditional practices that violate human rights and promote discriminatory elements.

If we go back to the Gospel, this is what Jesus criticized in his fellow Jews: you think you are good people by observing all the traditions about external things without caring about their spirit. This deserves the harsh judgement of Isaiah, “This people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines.” I ask Jesus to shine his light on my heart to that I can see the quality of my worship.

And remember, the church is not a museum for holy people. The Church is a hospital to heal sinful people like us. Come to heal yourself.

Blessings,

Luis+

Ministry at the time of Coronavirus (Covid 19): Prevent, cure and accompany

Now we have to shape what some have started calling; The Church at Home. Although I keep asking myself; What do those who do not have a home do? For this reason, at the same time, I am declaring today in our Holyrood Church a Lenten day of prayer, fasting and reading the Bible in the Time of the Coronavirus.
