The Bible readings for Sunday remind us that we were called to servant leadership and that greatness is found in serving. It’s ironic that James and John ask for places of honor immediately after Jesus has just told them how he will suffer humiliation and be killed. Ever since Peter’s confession of faith, Jesus has tried to show his followers how the word “Messiah” might not mean what they think it means.

Las lecturas bíblicas del domingo nos recuerdan que fuimos llamad@s al liderazgo de servicio y que la grandeza se encuentra en el servicio. Es irónico que Santiago y Juan pidan lugares de honor inmediatamente después de que Jesús les acaba de decir cómo sufrirá la humillación y será asesinado. Desde la confesión de fe de Pedro, Jesús ha tratado de mostrar a sus seguidor@s cómo la palabra "Mesías" podría no significar lo que ell@s creen que significa.

Jesus' Kingdom operates by a different set of standards. Greatness is not found in position. Greatness is not found in the exercise of power. Greatness is not found in being served. Greatness is not found in commanding others. Greatness is not found in wealth. Greatness is not found in intellect. In Jesus' Kingdom, greatness is found in serving. If you are going to become greatest among Jesus' followers, you are going to serve, especially your own family (1 Timothy 5:8) and your Kingdom family members. It's that simple. But in case we forget, Jesus gave us the cross to remind us that the path of obedience, the path to greatness, the path of glory is found in serving God by serving others. Since the pivotal moment of Peter’s confession (8:29), our attention has turned, not only toward Jerusalem, but also toward an inevitable decision: can you, will you follow Jesus so closely that you accept his fate as your own? Can you, will you follow him to the death? James and John are certainly willing to follow Jesus into glory. Jesus tries repeatedly to help them understand that his glory depends on his complete submission to God, even if it leads to death. A follower of Jesus cannot experience one without the other. Participating in the life of Christ means submerging ourselves – whoever we are – in service to those Christ died to save – whoever they are. “For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

El Reino de Jesús opera según un conjunto diferente de normas. La grandeza no se encuentra en la posición. La grandeza no se encuentra en el ejercicio del poder. La grandeza no se encuentra en ser servido. La grandeza no se encuentra en mandar a ot@os. La grandeza no se encuentra en la riqueza. La grandeza no se encuentra en el intelecto. En el Reino de Jesús, la grandeza se encuentra en el servicio. Si vas a llegar a ser el o la más grande entre l@s seguidor@s de Jesús, vas a servir, especialmente a tu propia familia (1 Timoteo 5: 8) y a l@s miembros de tu familia del Reino. Es así de simple. Pero en caso de que lo olvidemos, Jesús nos dio la cruz para recordarnos que el camino de la obediencia, el camino a la grandeza, el camino de la gloria se encuentra en servir a Dios sirviendo a las demás personas. Desde el momento crucial de la confesión de Pedro (8:29), nuestra atención se ha vuelto, no solo hacia Jerusalén, sino también hacia una decisión inevitable: ¿puedes seguir a Jesús tan de cerca que aceptes su destino como el tuyo? ¿Puedes, lo seguirás hasta la muerte? Sin duda, Santiago y Juan están dispuestos a seguir a Jesús a la gloria. Jesús trata repetidamente de ayudarles a comprender que su gloria depende de su completa sumisión a Dios, incluso si lleva a la muerte. Un seguidor o seguidora de Jesús no puede experimentar uno sin el otro.

It has been said that Jesus came proclaiming an upside-down kingdom. It is a popular way of saying that much of what Jesus said and taught changes the way we think. He said things like, if you want to live, you must die; And if you want to save your life, you must lose it. Our natural way of thinking is to hate our enemies and seek opportunities for revenge, but Jesus said: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. As we come to Mark 9, we find Jesus expressing another paradoxical way of thinking. He says that the way to greatness is the way to service. And if we want to be great, we must be the best servers. And, of course, this is not simply something that Jesus says, this is how He lived. The life and death of Jesus are the last demonstrations of the greatness of humility. That is the example of Anahí, Simón, Andrew, and Ronnie, how beautiful to have them in our church.

Se ha dicho que Jesús vino proclamando un reino al revés. Es una forma popular de decir que gran parte de lo que Jesús dijo y enseñó cambia nuestra forma de pensar. Dijo cosas como, si quieres vivir, debes morir; y si quieres salvar tu vida, debes perderla. Nuestra forma natural de pensar es odiar a nuestr@s enemig@s y buscar oportunidades de venganza, pero Jesús dijo: Ama a tus enemig@s y ora por quienes te persiguen. Al llegar a Marcos 9, encontramos a Jesús expresando otra forma de pensar paradójica. Dice que el camino a la grandeza es el camino al servicio. Y si queremos ser grandes, debemos ser los mejores servidores. Y, por supuesto, esto no es simplemente algo que Jesús dice, así es como Él vivió. La vida y la muerte de Jesús son las últimas demostraciones de la grandeza de la humildad. Ese es el ejemplo de Anahí, Simón,Andrew, y Ronnie, que bello tenerles en nuestra iglesia.

Last Sunday, October 10, we were celebrating Eucharistic Mass in the Cathedral of NY. With the participation of 24 people and directed by Canon Víctor Conrrado. Mass in Spanish will continue to be held every Tuesday of each month. Our Holy Cross / Holyrood Church gave the opening of this initiative.

El pasado domingo 10 de octubre, estuvimos celebrando Misa Eucarística en la Catedral de NY. Con la participación de 24 personas y dirigida por Canónigo Víctor Conrrado. La Misa en español se continuará llevando a cabo cada martes de cada mes. Nuestra Iglesia Santa Cruz/Holyrood dio a la apertura de esta iniciativa.
